Cyn Diwydiannu

Ym 1795, cafwyd y disgrifiad hwn o leoliad Abertawe: ‘near the centre of a most beautiful bay, on angle between two hills.’ Chwythai’r awelon deheuol dros ‘[a] vast expanse of sea rendering the air mild and the soil was to a considerable depth gravelly, making it a pleasant and very healthy situation, the adjoining country was very picturesque furnishing a great variety of beautiful ride and walks’.

Gyda’i chefnwlad amaethyddol, daeth y dref yn gyrchfan gwyliau glan môr mor boblogaidd fel y cafodd yr enw “Brighton Cymru”. Ond nid y rhain yn unig oedd y manteision yn Abertawe.

Roedd y dref hefyd ar ochr orllewinol maes glo de Cymru, a’i wythiennau glo’n ymestyn i lawr i’r môr ac afon Tawe yn hawdd ei llywio fel bod llongau a hwyliau’r moroedd yn gallu cael mynediad i’r maes glo.

Roedd y ffactorau hyn, ynghyd â’i hagosrwydd at weithfeydd mwyn copr Dyfnaint a Chernyw, wedi sicrhau ei dyfodol.
