Griffith John established the first of five boys’ schools in 1863. Pupils studied classic Chinese writings as well as the Bible.In 1874 John made the forward-thinking decision to set up a girls’ school. Education was not provided for girls in China at this time.
By 1897 there were various boys’ and girls’ schools, a secondary school and a teacher- training school. As a result of Griffith John’s innovations the area was about thirty years ahead of the rest of China in terms of education.
