Project Illuminate

Currently our Lecture Theatre is closed while the next exhibition is being set up.

Our History Gallery (Oriel Hanes) is closed for lighting works.

Thanks to a Welsh Government grant, we have started Project Illuminate. The project provides much needed new lighting for both our Lecture Theatre and History Gallery. Our electricians will be working on the rooms one at a time to minimise disruption.

This page will be updated as the project progresses, so keep checking to see the latest developments. Latest information is at the bottom of the page.

Day 1 – Electricians in bright & early to start in our Lecture Theatre.

Day 2 – Scaffolding tower installed

Day 3 – Electricians on scaffolding tower set off smoke detector beam. Museum evacuated…twice. (Sorry visitors)

Day 4 – New lights are looking good, no fire alarms (Phew)

Day 5 – Exciting progress, I’ll post pictures next week.

Day 6 – Here’s a picture of the new lights going into the Lecture Theatre

Day 7 – To avoid another unplanned fire drill, we had to isolate an the fire alarm while the work at height was being done. The beeping fire panel nearly drove the staff insane. Ear defenders have been purchased.

Day 8 – Drilling in the Lecture Theatre is triggering the sensors on the dorgards of the History Gallery. Our front of house staff are getting a real workout climbing the stairs to re-open them.

Day 9 – The lights are working! oooh, it looks bright.

Day 10 – Temporary light switch in (it is a big square button)

Day 11 – Final wiring before the electricians move onto the History Gallery.

Lecture Theatre lighting just about done, just height adjustments and light programming (yes, they are that fancy) to be done. Wish I would have taken a ‘before’ picture now!

We are back after half term! Thank you for everyone for visiting during the break – hope you enjoyed our activities!

Now onto the Oriel Hanes (History Gallery)

I remembered to take a ‘before’ picture, as you can see it is quite old and many of the lamps and tubes aren’t working:

Day 1 – First day for the History Gallery’s lighting project. Scaffolding moved from the Lecture Theatre to the History Gallery. Cases moved by our technician to make way for the scaffolding.

Day 2 – Removal of collections that are at risk and protective covers on cases. Scaffolding assembled.

Day 3 – More scaffolding assembled, more moving of collections, more trips up and down the stairs.
