 Margaret John was just as committed to the missionary work in China as her husband. She would sometimes accompany John on his preaching tours and also helped to open a hospital where she served as a nurse and matron.Margaret suffered from ill health throughout her life. In 1870 Griffith John and Margaret returned to Swansea for the first time since they had left for China. Whilst in Swansea John gave a number of lectures about his missionary work around the city. Margaret’s health deteriorated but she was desperate to return to China. She died on the crossing back to Hankou in 1873. |
 In 1874 John met and married Jeanette, the American widow of a former missionary.Jeannette worked closely with British sailors stationed in Hankou who were prone to drinking heavily. She set up “The Sailors Rest” inside the mission compound where they could come to learn about God and avoid drinking. In 1885 Jeannette also passed away.
