Amrywiaethu ar Gopr

Yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg, roedd 90% o gopr y byd yn cael ei fwyndoddi yng Nghwm Tawe. Datblygodd nifer o ddiwydiannau bach o ganlyniad i’r sgîl-gynnyrch.

Ceid arsenig yn y mwynau llawn copr a ddeuai o Ddyfnaint a Chernyw. O’r dyddodion copr hefyd ceid plwm, ac o’i brosesu, ceid arian. Roedd mabwysiadu Proses Gerstenhofer i gael gwared ar fwg copr afiach yn golygu y gellid casglu asid sylffwrig, y gellir ei ddefnyddio yn ei dro yn y diwydiant tunplat.

Disgrifir manteision amrywiaethu fel hyn yn llyfr Stephen Hughes, ‘Copperopolis’: ‘The massive infrastructure of the neighbouring Morfa and Hafod Copperworks encouraged diversification. Henry Hussey Vivian said, “I had seen the success of our neighbours, the Williams, who were engaged in a variety of undertakings and I resolved if possible to emulate them.” Ychwanegodd arian, sinc, metel melyn a chloddio glo at weithgarwch cwmni’r Hafod ac, erbyn 1854, roedd y rhain yn gyfartal â hanner elw’r cwmni, sef £56,000.”
